If you've tried to set up your May delivery ahead of time, you might have noticed that you weren't been able to make changes to your eggs until we made our recommendations first. We set the number of "available" eggs to "0" in our inventory system until after we've assigned all the eggs we know we have. We do this based on members' subscriptions / past ordering first.
We really want to be fair for everyone when we are short on eggs!
Why?
The short answer is that there will be fewer total eggs overall in May. We've added hens to our flocks. Hens take a while before they start laying in new flocks.
To make sure we have enough eggs for the May delivery, we're doing three things:
- We assigned recommended eggs in May based on our members' past subscriptions / ordering. This is to make sure that even if there aren't enough for everyone to get their normal full amount, our members still get eggs. So you may find that this month we be delivering 1-2 fewer cartons than normal. You'll see the amount you're getting in the portal.
- The member portal always reflects the number of eggs we expect to have. This means the number available might be at "0". If you try to add eggs in your portal when eggs are at "0", you will see a "Requested quantity not in stock" error. If that happens, you can always check back in a day or two and try again. There will always be some members who skip their deliveries. Those eggs will automatically go back into inventory.
- We are making sure that our newer members are on an "egg wait list" -- we would love to share our eggs with everyone! But we want to make sure that we reserve eggs for our members who have been with us first! Once the newer hens start laying, we'll add eggs to newer members' deliveries each month.
Be sure to note how many eggs you are getting
You're going to want to make sure to pay attention to how many eggs you are getting. Your member portal, the emails/texts about your next delivery, the reminder on delivery day and the check sheet (if you are picking up at a neighborhood site) will all remind you about the number of cartons for this month.
If you pick up at a neighborhood pickup site and "always just grab five cartons" and this month you are only getting 4, that means if you grab 5 cartons, you are taking a neighbor's eggs (oh no!)
When will there be enough eggs for everyone?
Since we aren't a factory, our hens will follow natural cycles of more and fewer eggs. We also have more total demand for our eggs -- and some hens aren't laying quite as much as we projected yet. Here is what to expect:
- May: Fewer people had eggs reduced than in April
- June: As more hens phase in, we should see a small bump in the total number of eggs available
- July: Should have a bigger increase
- September/October: We are expecting an even larger increase in available eggs
- November/December: Another big jump in eggs
By January 2022 we should have twice the eggs than we had for January 2021 - so hopefully everyone will be ready to make lots of creme brûlée and eggnog to ring in the New Year!
